Southern Fiordland - Hiking to Port Craig Hut

New Zealand is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, boasting magnificent mountains, dense forests, and awe-inspiring coastal regions. One hidden gem among these natural wonders is the Port Craig Hut, a secluded haven tucked away in the heart of the South Island.

We ventured along the South Coast Track in southern Fiordland to reach Port Craig School Hut. The 17km track followed the coast, climbing up into thick rainforest before opening up onto empty beaches.

There are some cool suspension bridges along the way, passing over freshwater rivers and overlooking the vibrant vegetation that engulfs the trail. The area is also dotted with historical remnants, including an old sawmill and tramway, which stand as a testament to the region's rich heritage.

The beaches were pristine, we spotted some Hector dolphins in nice and close to shore and then stopped at some of the bays to dive for crays and collect fresh mussels for dinner.

After an amazing day of hiking it was nice to see the Port Craig Hut emerge through the rainforest. This awesome little hut has been converted from an old school, and is well-equipped with basic amenities, including bunk beds, cooking facilities, and a cozy fireplace.

There's a great little seat nearby overlooking the ocean which is perfect for watching the sunset.

It was a comfortable night at the hut and the return journey was just as spectacular as the day before!
